If you thought Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh dropping “Pitt” from her last name was part of a ploy in her parents' contentious divorce, you couldn’t be more wrong. According to new sources, the decision to legally change her name was entirely hers, and her drastic move proves how serious she is about it.
ICYMI, Shiloh filed with a court to drop “Pitt” from her last name on her 18th birthday on May 27, making her the first of Jolie and Pitt’s six kids to legally do this. Now, insiders say it was all her idea.

“Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn’t know and can’t speak for it,” a source told Entertainment Tonight on Saturday. (Another source confirmed this detail to PEOPLE as well.) However, the Maleficent star may have indirectly influenced her daughter, as she dropped her last name. According to ET, Jolie was originally born Angelina Jolie Voight, but after “a long estrangement” from her dad Jon Voight, she petitioned the court to drop Voight from her name, which was granted in 2002.
